Utah officials blame lack of logging for major wildfire

Manzanita Fire Grows To 5000 Acres In South California, Evacuation Warnings Issued

What they are saying "Things change day-to-day".

Authorities ordered more evacuations at the fire that has torched more than 67 square miles (174 square kilometers) in preparation for winds and low humidity that could push fire growth north after calmer weather kept its growth in check over the weekend.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Insisting that logging could have cleaned up dead, bug-infested trees that are fueling a Utah wildfire, a Republican state lawmaker blamed federal mismanagement and lawsuits by "tree hugger" environmentalists for the blaze that has burned 13 homes and forced the evacuation of 1,500 people.

Over in Utah, the Brian Head Fire, which started 10 days ago, has grown to about 46,000 acres, and Mother Nature isn't helping the crews.

Gov. Doug Ducey declared a state of emergency Friday in Arizona to authorize the use of $200,000 of emergency funds to counter increased wildfire activity.

Even as shovel- and chainsaw-wielding crews and bulldozers moved into the rugged, remote smoke-enshrouded hills near Iron County's Red Creek Reservoir, about 8 miles east of Paragonah, other crews continued to painstaking work of strengthening and extending fire breaks and lines on the eastern and southern edges of the blaze.

The fire, dubbed the Manzanita Fire, started about 3:10 p.m. on Lambs Canyon near Dump Road following a single auto crash, the Riverside County Fire Department said in a news release. The fire started on Saturday and fire officials are still investigating what ignited it.

And in Arizona, firefighters had to ground aircraft used in fighting the Frye Fire because of drones being flown in the vicinity of the blaze, said Bureau of Land Management spokesman Dennis Godfrey.

In Central California, a 2.5-square-mile (6.5 sq. kilometer) wildfire that burned at least one building was 60 percent contained.

The so-called Goodwin fire has burned almost 31 square miles of land in Prescott National Forest, according to KPNX.

Officials say crews have stopped the fire from advancing and on Wednesday were trying to put out areas still burning or smoldering within the fire's perimeter. Firefighters in Idaho battled five lightning-sparked wildfires burning in grass and brush.

Authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for residents in some areas threatened by the blaze, though it was not clear how many people were affected, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Meanwhile in California, firefighters had two major blazes under enough control to allow evacuated residents to return to their homes. Nearly 1 million more acres had burned by Thursday, compared with the 10-year average through June 22.
