Vegas holds all the cards with NHL expansion draft list out

Fleury among players exposed for Vegas NHL expansion draft

"The issue for us isn't going to be can we fill out the roster".

The most notable player the Penguins will expose to Vegas in this week's National Hockey League expansion draft has been public for almost a week.

For 72 hours, Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee is the most powerful man in hockey. And teams aren't prohibited from making trades that would keep certain unprotected players from being selected.

While that sounds kind and human, this is just a ploy for the Golden Knights to turn a player into an even bigger haul.

"We can put a good team on the ice, and accumulate draft picks and be in a surplus situation in the next couple of years", he said, according to SportsNet. "People have identified people on other clubs that they'd like to have and we have to establish the value for that and whatever you want to give us has to be better than what we can claim from that club".

Patrice Bergeron: Bergeron has a no-movement clause, but it would also be a waste of time for me to tell you why he's worth protecting if you're the Bruins. There's a similar concern from the Western Conference champion Nashville Predators, who will most likely expose a few intriguing forwards to protect defensemen Roman Josi, P.K. Subban, Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm.

Other notable forwards left unprotected were Los Angeles's Dustin Brown, Montreal's Tomas Plekanec and Pittsburgh's Chris Kunitz. As for defensemen, Buffalo's Zach Bogosian and Dallas' Dan Hamhuis are available.

Florida's James Reimer takes over for Roberto Luongo in the second period of a game in Philadelphia last March.

Chicago: The rumored deal that involves Marcus Kruger and Trevor van Riemsdyk heading to the Golden Knights is still possible with the Blackhawks' protection list.

The Golden Knights must submit their 30 selections - one player from each team - by 10am et Wednesday. Both Souray and Tom Gilbert got beat to the puck, then Joe Pavelski beat Souray around the net, then various San Jose players beat various Oilers in front of the net before the puck was banged in.

The Vegas Golden Knights have said they want to build around youth, so they're using the upcoming expansion draft as a chance to load up on draft picks.

"We really like what we're looking at right now", McPhee said Sunday, per TSN. Any player signed in this manor will count as the Expansion Draft pick from that team.

Some players left unprotected, such as Ottawa forward Bobby Ryan, carry hefty contracts, which Vegas might shy away from so not to restrict the team's payroll structure under the salary cap.

Grabner, 29, is signed for next season with a salary-cap hit of $1.65 million, modest compared to his first Rangers season, when he started fast and finished with 27 goals.

The moves should add to the draft pick and prospect stockpile for the Golden Knights, who already have the No. 6 overall pick in this year's entry draft.

When the list was initially released, some fans were confused and surprised to see that forward Brayden Point was left off the protected list, but he doesn't meet the exposure requirements (still considered a rookie), and thus, Vegas will not be able to select him.
