Australian woman who called 911 shot dead by Minneapolis police

Justine Ruzczyk with her fiance Don Damond and his son

Zach Damond, the son Don Damond, told The Star Tribune the woman "heard a noise in the alley and called the police".

Family, residents and this city's mayor are demanding to know why a woman was fatally shot by a police officer over the weekend and why the officer's body camera was off at the time, reports CBS Minnesota.

"She thought something bad was happening, and the next thing I know they take my best friend's life", he said.

"I have a lot of questions about why the body cameras weren't on, questions that I hope and anticipate will be answered in the next few days", the mayor told a news conference on Sunday night.

A Minneapolis yoga teacher who called police Saturday night to report a disturbance near her house was fatally shot by an officer who, according to eyewitness reports, didn't even get out of the vehicle.

"More information will be available once initial interviews with incident participants and any witnesses are complete", the agency said in a statement Sunday.

"She will undoubtedly be very missed by the family, she was treasured and loved and we will really miss her".

"This killing shows us that no one is immune", one speaker said at the vigil.

"I've been heartsick every time there's been an officer-involved shooting", she said. The City will continue to provide updated information on this incident, and the BCA's investigation, as soon as we have it.

Friends and neighbors called her a "peaceful, lovely woman" who loved animals and helping others.

The tragic news also trickled through Damond's circle of friends, who remembered her as an "infectious and loving" woman with "so much beauty".

More than 200 people, including social activists, gathered for a vigil Sunday near the spot where Damond died hours earlier.

A young man identifying himself as the woman's son, Zach, but believed to be the biological child of her fiancé Don Damond, 50, has appeared in a tearful Facebook live condemning police violence.

Damond is believed to have been living in the USA for at least the past three years.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it is providing consular assistance to her family.

The woman's family in Australia released a statement through the country's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, saying it's a "very hard time", according to NBC News.

"This is a very hard time for our family", DFAT said in its statement on the shooting.

She has been described as an "incredible woman" and a "brilliant, well-known, local healer". Reports that the police officers' body cameras were turned off is also causing outrage by some people giving feedback about the incident on social media. They noted that an investigation has been launched into the incident, which is now "in its early stages".

In a statement, the BCA said the shooting happened north of the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue South in the city's Fulton neighborhood. She was loved. She should be alive.

Davis-Suggs said her own nephew was shot and killed by police in the early 2000s.
