England vs South Africa 2017: 2nd Test day 2, 5 talking points

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis

Earlier, South Africa lost its last four wickets for 26 runs to be all out for 335 in its first innings after a magnificent spell of 4-4 by James Anderson.

Yorkshire pair Root and Jonny Bairstow looked more assured and Root sped to his 50 off just 40 balls, with nine counter-attacking boundaries.

It was a roller-coaster day, though, and South Africa took command only in the final session.

Vernon Philander and Chris Morris could not add to the damage they created the previous evening as the former was dismissed by James Anderson for 54.

"I don't think numerous batsmen will think they got jaffas (well-bowled deliveries) to get out from".

England's top order failed - again - on the first morning, and the lunchtime 82-4 could have been even worse given the let-offs Root had before he had got going in his ultimately match-defining 190.

The spectators were quickly hushed, though, when England openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings were both gone with only three runs scored.

Dean Elgar is a solid cricketer who will benefit from handing back the reins, but Hashim Amla's form is starting to become a concern.

Root confirmed England would field an unchanged team after off-spinner Moeen Ali, who took 10 wickets on a turning pitch at Lord's, and slow left-armer Liam Dawson helped ease the workload on his seamers.

Jimmy Anderson called on England's bowlers to repeat the heroics of their famous 2015 Ashes triumph at Trent Bridge to prevent South Africa leveling the series.

Newly appointed Test skipper Joe Root had a dream start as he not only performed well with the bat but was also brilliant with his bowling changes.

At lunch, Root and Ballance, desperate to nail down his Test place after being recalled at Lord's, had taken England to 85 for two. That could well be the difference between the two sides at the end of the series and it is an issue South Africa need to address but they don't need to labour the point with de Kock just yet. When he plays county cricket, he is able to stand back very deep into his crease, and still then his trigger movements are put into action to come forward in time to be on the front foot when the ball reaches him. Morkel ended Root's gem of an innings when Quinton de Kock caught him behind the stumps. Kuhn faced 42 balls for two single-figure scores at Lord's, undone by a ideal Stuart Broad delivery in the first innings and perhaps a little unlucky to edge James Anderson down the leg side second time out.

Vaughan believes the current crop of England batsmen could learn lessons from the way South Africa have approached batting at Trent Bridge.
