Kirk Cousins not expected to sign long-term deal with Redskins

If the Washington Redskins place the franchise tag on Kirk Cousins for a third straight season, his one-year salary would be worth about $34.5 million.

The quarterback wants to wait until after the 2017 season before he works out a long-term deal with the Redskins, ESPN.com reported.

In 2016, Cousins finished with single-season team records in attempts, completions and passing yards and matched his team record for 300-yard passing games (seven).

The 49ers' quarterback of the future literally won't be a 49er until the future, though the clock on that is about to really start ticking.

They have until next Monday to do a long-term deal, though there's no indication that's even being worked on. The deadline to sign franchise players to long-term contracts is Monday at 4 p.m. ET. But if he stayed healthy and continued signing one-year deals, every penny would be guaranteed for Cousins.

Kirk Cousins has to prove himself to the Washington Redskins once more this upcoming season.

If the deadline comes and goes, Cousins will just pocket his $23.94 million for the season and then head into free agency in 2018.

Former Redskins general manager Charlie Casserly believes by not signing a long term contract, Cousins remains in a position of power. Again, this should come with little shock to most fans.

Cousins won over coach Jay Gruden during the preseason of 2015 and the rest is history.

The 49ers are set up to make a massive offer to Cousins if he's a restricted free agent, and that would not be a good development for Washington.

As far as the transition tag goes, which would cost the Redskins $28,732,320, the reason why that's less than the franchise tag is that it would give another National Football League team the ability to sign Cousins to an offer sheet.
