Legendary Director George A. Romero Dead at 77

Horror Movie Legend George Romero Dies At 77

George Romero died on Sunday at the age of 77, Variety reports.

"[Romero] leaves behind a loving family, many friends and a filmmaking legacy that has endured, and will continue to endure, the test of time", his partner Grunwald said.

Romero made cinematic and horror history when he directed 1968's Night of the Living Dead, which kicked off the zombie sub-genre. The last film he directed was the 2009 zombie flick Survival of the Dead, and he was also involved in producing Road of the Dead and the Deadtime Stories series.

Romero was born in 1940 in NY to a Cuban father and Lithuanian-American mother. The film went on to inspire scores of directors such as John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper thanks to its impactful low-budget horror.

According to Romero, the difference between the old and up-to-date horror movies was not the desire to make the audience feel unpleasant, but it was quite a mature and slender idea.

Here's the mastermind himself talking about the impact of Night of the Living Dead in 2012 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. At his side were Suzanne Desrocher Romero, his wife of almost six years, and daughter Tina. Numerous "rules" of the zombie genre, such as destroying the brain of a zombie in order to stop it, originated from Romero's films. Other notable films in the series include Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985).

Outside of the Living Dead franchise, Romero worked on other projects which his fans have rallied around. Take a look at our George Romero wiki for everything you need to know about the iconic director. Romero also terrified audiences with 1973's The Crazies, 1978's Martin, 1982's Creepshow, 1988's Monkey Shines, 1993's The Dark Half, and 2000's Bruiser.

Of the recent proliferation of zombie movies, he told TIME: "I don't rush out to see those films".
