More than 1200 nurses at Boston hospital start strike

Tufts Medical Center Hit By First Nurses Strike In Boston In 31 Years

The MNA called the strike historic, saying it is the first strike by nurses in Boston in over 30 years and the largest nurses' strike in MA history. "This decision really shows administration's lack of respect for its nurses and for the safety our patients".

Nurses claim they would experience "significant losses" under the new plan and proposed the hospital adopt a multi-employer pension plan, one hospital officials say it costly and risky.

The strike was only supposed to last 24 hours, but hospital officials announced that striking nurses would be locked out of the facility until at least Monday.

Tufts has hired more than 300 replacement workers under a guaranteed five-day, $5 million contract.

Hundreds of nurses at Tufts Medical Center are set to end their strike early Thursday, but that does not mean they'll be going back to work just yet. "But make no mistake, we will continue to provide exceptional patient care", hospital president and CEO Michae Wagner said in a statement.

"We get gunshots, we get people falling from trees, getting hit by cars".

"It's disrespectful. It feels very devaluing", Mary Havlicek Cornacchia, a Tufts nurse and co-chair of the bargaining committee told the Boston Globe.

The union said Tufts nurses are the lowest paid in Boston and are seeking wage increases, higher staffing levels and "pension protections/improvements that will make the hospital market competitive". "They leave holes on schedules".
