Natural History Museum Replaces Dippy With A Giant Blue Whale

The 25-metre-long skeleton will take centre stage in Hintze Hall, replacing the popular Dippy the Diplodocus, which first went on display there in 1979.

Kate and George had a memorable outing in 2015, where she was spotted holding his hand and showing him around the exhibits at the Natural History Museum.

Kate said that both Prince George and Princess Charlotte love going to the Natural History Museum - especially to see the dinosaur exhibit. "The transformation of Hintze Hall represents a new era for us as a natural history museum for the future".

The blue whale is the biggest creature on earth and the museum hopes the size of the skeleton will leave visitors to the hall, which will reopen on Friday, in awe.

He added that he had seen Dippy the Diplodocus on that visit.

The skeleton is of a whale that died off the coast of Ireland in 1891.

"The glory of this museum is you are surrounded by the real thing", Sir David said.

"Hanging a whale from the roof of a Grade I listed building was no easy feat", he said, as he thanked those who had worked to get the 221 bones of the largest animal to ever live above the heads of the audience.

The mammal, which has been nicknamed "Hope", originally went on display in 1934 but has been moved as part of a revamp at the south Kensington museum.

"Who could fail to be inspired standing here in this wonderful hall".

It will be surrounded by other some rather unbelievable specimens too, including a 4.5bn year-old meteorite and a Mantellisaurus skeleton.

Hope is not the only new specimen in Hintze Hall.
