New Horizons Flyover of Pluto

Happy Anniversary New Horizons! Probe Flew by Pluto 2 Years Ago Today

The video starts just southwest of Sputnik Planitia - the huge plains of nitrogen ice that form part of Pluto's signature giant heart.

The New Horizons spacecraft made its flight around Pluto on July 14, 2015.

The another video released by NASA featured the largest moon of the Pluto named Charon, the video is flyover video of Charon that represents 1,200 km (750 miles) wide moon.

Now, for the spacecraft's one-year anniversary of its Pluto flyby, NASA has released two new videos based on digital elevation models and New Horizons' data of both Pluto and Charon.

In the description of the video, NASA officials wrote, "The viewer first passes over the western margin of Sputnik, where it borders the dark, cratered terrain of Cthulhu Macula, with the blocky mountain ranges located within the plains seen on the right". All the names of Pluto and Charon are informal and pull from science fiction and fantasy sources like "Star Trek" and "Lord of the Rings".

"The equally exciting flight over Charon begins high over the hemisphere New Horizons saw on its closest approach, then descends over the deep, wide canyon of Serenity Chasma", said NASA. The clips shared by NASA provide a glimpse of the complex terrain of Pluto.

New Horizons has moved on from Pluto and is now flying deeper into the Kuiper Belt, a vast area filled with icy bodies out beyond Neptune's orbit. The flyover then moves south, covering an area called Oz Terra before ending at the Vulcan Planum plains and Clarke Montes mountains.

The mapping and rendering were done by Paul Schenk and John Blackwell of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. In both of them, topographic relief has been exaggerated by two to three times, and surface colors have been enhanced, to highlight topography and detail, NASA officials said.
