NIA to probe recovery of explosive in UP Assembly

Explosive in Assembly New security measures to be followed inside UP Vidhan Sabha

This remark came a day after suspicious white powder was found in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly during an ongoing session.

Security officials were seen reviewing the Assembly complex after Wednesday's incident. With a weight of almost 150 gms, the packet was placed under the seat of Samajwadi Party MLA Mano Pandey.

Confirming the Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) explosive found, Adityanath said asserted that a strong security system must be established as the situation could likely be a "terror conspiracy" as well. The powder was then sent for analysis at a forensic lab which identified it as PECTIN - an extremely powerful explosive that is hard to detect.

"Everyone needs to be cautious related to security matters".

He also demanded that a five-member parliamentary committee be formed by the state government to probe the matter or the issue be probed by a senior official. "It will be revealed who is behind this", Adityanath said. A joint effort is needed for this.

After the CM's statement, the Speaker announced several measures to ensure security of the House besides agreeing to recommend an NIA probe. He also said that arrangements will be made for the MLAs to keep their bags outside.

The driver of legislators will be verified and those having no pass will not be allowed entry inside assembly premises, he said.

The report has led to massive outrage against Adityanath, with many on social media accusing him of connecting religion to politics and administration, and also starving it of funds when it needs protection the most.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna rebutted the charges and said the government had responded swiftly to the tragedy and the guilty would not be spared. "Now, this has become a more serious matter", he said.

"Security guidelines must be issued and everyone must follow them".
