NY sports broadcast icon Bob Wolff dies at age 96

Life ends for legend with broadcasting's longest career: Bob Wolff dies at 96

Bob Wolff, the only sportscaster to call play-by-play of championships in all four major North American professional team sports, has died.

Legendary sportscaster Bob Wolff has passed away.

Wolff called Don Larsen's flawless game in the 1956 World Series, the Colts-Giants NFL championship game (the "greatest game ever played" according to many), multiple NBA Finals, the Rose Bowl, the Gator Bowl, the Sugar Bowl and many others.

Wolff started his career as a broadcaster in 1939 as a member of the CBS affiliate in Durham, North Carolina while he was a student at Duke University.

The Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him into the broadcaster's wing in 1995, and the Basketball Hall of Fame did likewise in 2008. He returned to NY the following year and spent 50 years broadcasting events at Madison Square Garden, from Knicks basketball and Rangers hockey to the Westminster Dog Show. He became the first sportscaster for Washington's WTTG-TV on the DeMont network in 1946 and began doing television play-by-play for the Washington Senators a year later.

This year, he did sports commentary on News 12 Long Island and hosted the Con Edison Scholastic Sports Award program on WHUD Radio in Westchester.

Bob Wolff's career spanned 78 years, longest consecutive run by a broadcaster, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

In addition to his work with the Knicks and Rangers, Wolff was part of the team for NBC's baseball "Game of the Week" broadcasts.

"Bob was a dear friend of the Yankees organization and he will be deeply missed".

Born in New York City in November 1920, Wolff went on to attend Duke University, getting his professional career underway in Durham, North Carolina, in 1939.

Bob Wolff, who spent eight decades as a sportscaster and provided the play-by-play when the New York Knicks captured their two National Basketball Association championships in the 1970s, has died.

Wolff served in the Navy as a supply officer in the Pacific during World War II.
