Pakistan announced the start of military operations on the border with Afghanistan

Pakistan launches offensive against IS near Afghan border

Pakistan Army has launched an operation called Khyber-4 in Rajgal Valley area of Khyber Agency, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Major General Asif Ghafoor announced on Sunday.

"This operation was necessary because Daesh is getting established there and we have to stop the influence spreading into Pakistani territory through the Rajgal Valley", military spokesman Lt Gen Asif Ghafoor said.

Addressing a media conference, the ISPR DG said the operation has been launched to wipe out terrorists and consolidate gains made in other military operations to further enhance the security of Pakistan's borders. The JIT has no direct link with the army, he said. "It is a subjudice case, and it will go to court".

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor recalled that a meeting of the provincial apex committee held in Karachi was attended by the Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa to review the security situation.

He said the situation along the Line of Control (LOC) showed extraordinary trends recently, following the hot political situation inside India.

The Karachi operation was initiated in September 2013, on the directives of the federal government to purge the city of terrorist elements.

Alluding to Afghanistan, Ghafoor said across the Khyber Agency border there are safe havens for multiple "terrorist" organisations that are linked to recent attacks in Pakistan, including the Parachinar assault.

"The DG ISPR said one division troops with support of Pakistan Air Force are taking part in the operation".

Since the launch of Operation RuF, the army has launched 46 major operations in the country and over 9,000 intelligence-based operations (IBOs). He said a considerable decline was also registered in cases of street crime and efforts were at hand to check this trend effectively. We fire towards bunkers where we think the firing is coming from. During these operations 22 terrorists were killed in crossfire.

Answering a question about the case of Indian Naval Agent Kubhushan Jhadev, the DG ISPR said, the agent was given time to appeal before the appellate Military Court and after rejection from there the culprit had appealed before the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

Afghanistan and Pakistan have long accused each other of turning a blind eye to militants operating along their porous border.

There have been 27 major operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 817 IBOs, Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said.

On the book by Raymond Davis, he told a questioner that there was a need to see that Raymond had been claimant of Diplomatic Immunity before leaving Pakistan but he wrote a book as a private contractor. "There is no direct army involvement in the JIT" he asserted, adding that the "Pakistan Army will continue playing its role for the security of Pakistan with other institutions".

It is a sub-judice matter and the SC will make its decision in the case, he said adding that it is the duty of every Pakistani to ensure the supremacy of the law and Constitution.
