Presidential Election 2017: Electors Are Using These Special Ink Pens to Cast Their Votes Today

President Election in India: Ramnath Kovind and Meria Kumar are the two standing in the President Election today from 10 AM to 5 PM.

With the State have a small population, the votes of the individual MLA is 17 each while that of an MP is 708 with Meghalaya being a small State.

To become the next president, either of the candidates needs to secure at least one vote more than 50 percent of the total votes cast.

Ananth Kumar said Modi noted that Chief Ministers of Odisha, Bihar, Telangana and Tamil Nadu had extended their support to Kovind.

Zaidi had also pointed out that political parties can not issue any whip to their MPs and MLAs in the matter of voting. The total votes of all those supporting Kovind comes to over 60 per cent, which is a lot higher than the required 50 per cent.

With the numbers stacked against her, Meira Kumar urged members of the electoral college to heed their "voice of conscience" and vote for an ideology that binds India.

Fadnavis said the NDA's presidential pick has organisational and administrative skills and is a constitution expert.

"I believe Kovind is a fit Presidential candidate. But the battle must be fought and fought hard", the Congress president said. MPs vote will go to Green ballots and for MLAs, there will be Pink ballots.

The ballot boxes will be brought to Delhi for counting on July 20. The voting has been taking place in Room no 62 in Parliament. Parliamentarians will vote according to tables allocated to the States they represent. The Opposition parties have already chosen Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi as their joint nominee for vice-president. There will be six tables. President Pranab Mukherjee's tenure ends on July 24.
