Russian Federation urges unconditional return of U.S. compounds

Vyacheslav Prokofiev TASS

Peskov said any US preconditions to return the property would be unacceptable for Moscow and said Washington's failure to hand back the compounds ran counter to worldwide law.

"We have repeatedly said that we think any conditions are unacceptable".

"What is happening is - de facto and de jure - a violation of worldwide law", he said.

Apparently alluding to Trump, Mr Peskov said he hoped the USA would be able to show some "political wisdom". "Contacts are happening between the foreign policy departments".

A ceasefire agreement for southern Syria was reached by Russian and US Presidents, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, at their meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Germany's Hamburg on July 7.

In December 2016, Washington imposed a number of restrictive measures on Russia over Moscow's alleged meddling in the U.S. presidential election, including sanctions against several Russian individuals and entities, as well as the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats and the closure of two Russian diplomatic compounds in the United States.

U.S. intelligence services believe Russian Federation ordered cyber attacks on the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Hillary Clinton's campaign and other political organizations, in an attempt to influence the election in favor of the Republican candidate, Donald Trump.

The issue of the closure of the two Russian compounds is on the agenda again in Washington on Monday, with a meeting between U.S. Undersecretary of State Thomas Shannon and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova complained that the U.S. was also refusing to issue visas for Russian diplomats to replace those expelled.

"No, I will leave this without comments", Peskov told reporters. And, you know, some excessive words can only do harm.

"We still hope that our American colleagues will demonstrate a certain political wisdom and political will", he remarked during a conference call.
