Takata Recalls Another 2.7M Air Bag Inflators

This graphic from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows an airbag expanding shooting shrapnel toward the driver

Takata does not know of any ruptures from these inflators, and it is conducting this recall "out of an abundance of caution".

According to a report from the New York Times, the victim was using a hammer to fix a parked 2001 Honda Accord at his Miami home when the air bag inflator ruptured and exploded.

The affected vehicles are from the 2005 through 2012 model years.

Now that Takata has added another 2.7 million airbags to its giant recall, it's a good idea to check to see if yours have been recalled as well.

The campaign will affect models from Ford, Mazda, and Nissan.

But at least 17 deaths worldwide and more than 180 injuries have been linked to faulty inflators that can explode with too much force. About 70 million airbags have been covered by recalls in the USA, a figure that grows to more than 100 million worldwide. Takata for years has made some of its inflators with a chemical desiccant to the keep the ammonium nitrate propellant dry. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) website, as of January 19, 2017, some 42,000,000 vehicles are affected by Takata airbag recalls.

In a statement released earlier this week, Mazda states that about 6,000 B-Series trucks from model years 2007-2009 sold in the USA are affected by the recall. Although none of the inflators blew apart, some showed a pattern of deterioration in the ammonium nitrate propellant over time "that is understood to predict a future risk of inflator rupture". The company has agreed to recall all original equipment inflators without a drying agent in phases by the end of 2018.

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said Tuesday that NHTSA needs to move faster to figure out whether all remaining Takata inflators are safe. "We certainly can't afford to wait until the December 2019 deadline for that determination". Takata recently declared bankruptcy, leaving carmakers potentially stuck for billions of dollars in recall-related expenses.

Key Safety Systems, a Chinese-owned company based in MI, is paying $1.6 billion for almost all of Takata's operations.
