Earthquake with magnitude 6.6 hits Luzon island Philippines'

Metro Manila residents reported feeling the quake as far north as Quezon City.

A 6.1-magnitude natural disaster hit parts of Luzon on Friday, the state-run Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. The shaking buildings forced the evacuation of offices and schools.

It said the quake was tectonic in origin with a depth of 160 km.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology did not issue any tsunami warning and said that it expected aftershocks. The country is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where about 90 per cent of the world's earthquakes occur.

In June, two people died and hundreds were injured when a 6.5 magnitude natural disaster struck the eastern Philippines. The following month a 5.9-magnitude tremor killed one person there in March.

A 7.2 magnitude quake hit the province of Bohol in October 2013 in which more than 200 people were killed.
