2016 was Earth's warmest year on record, global report shows

Tag: President Trump

Last year was the third consecutive year of record-breaking heat in 137 years of record-keeping, according to the new 299-page report, which was written by 450 scientists in more than 60 nations.

An worldwide, peer-reviewed publication released each summer, the State of the Climate is the authoritative annual summary of the global climate published as a supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

Scientists who collected data for the report attribute the record heat to long-term global warming and El Niño. Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, all drivers of atmospheric warming, recorded new highs a year ago, with carbon dioxide surpassing a milestone 400 parts per million for the first time in recent history.

The US President has repeatedly dismissed man-made climate change as "a Chinese hoax" and he sent shockwaves through the global community when he announced the US would withdraw from the Paris Agreement.

The ominous news comes two months after President Donald Trump announced the United States would withdraw from the 2015 Paris accord on global warming, a decision that sparked widespread worldwide criticism.

A report compiled by scientists around the world confirmed Thursday that 2016 was the hottest year since tracking began. Syria and Nicaragua are the only countries that have not signed the agreement.

Atmospheric CO2 concentration reached 402.9 parts per million (ppm), surpassing 400 ppm for the first time in the modern record and in ice core records dating back as far as 800,000 years.

But as humanity continues to rely on fossil fuels for energy, unprecedented levels of greenhouse gases are polluting the atmosphere, acting like a blanket to capture heat around the Earth, the report emphasised.

The globally averaged sea surface temperature was the highest on record.

Land temperatures warmed too, average Arctic land surface temperature was 3.6 Fahrenheit (2.0 Celsius) above the 1981-2010 average. The warming represented a 3.5°C increase in temperature since recordkeeping began in 1900.

The Antarctic, too, experienced record low sea ice coverage, and overall, there was less snow and ice on planet Earth than normal previous year. Drought conditions were observed in northeastern Brazil for the fifth consecutive year, making this the longest drought on record in this region.

In 2016, meteorologists recorded 93 named tropical storms worldwide - above the 1981 to 2010 average of 82, but fewer than the 101 storms in 2015. It found an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather, and warming in the Arctic at twice the rate of the global average - a phenomenon that could impact sea levels, the weather and other patterns in the lower 48 states.

Record high annual temperatures swept Mexico and India.
