Alcoholism among women rises in new study

High-risk drinking increases substantially among some groups in the US, study says

That's nearly 30 million Americans actively struggling with alcohol abuse. However, the details of the study are rather alarming - and pretty risky.

The study data were derived from face-to-face interviews conducted in two nationally representative surveys of US adults: the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, with data collected from April 2001 to June 2002, and the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III, with data collected from April 2012 to June 2013.

Between those two groups (about a decade apart from one another), the number of people who drank alcohol increased by 11%.

Ethnic minority populations and Americans with lower education and income levels also had much more noticeable increases between the two surveys, according to the study.

The results take an even more interesting turn when gender is brought into the conversation.

High-risk drinking - defined as having four or more drinks per day at least once a week each year - increased 15 percent in men, while dependency went up 35 percent. This is especially true among women, older adults, racial/ethnic minorities, and the socioeconomically disadvantaged.

"These findings portend increases in many chronic comorbidities in which alcohol use has a substantial role", the researchers write.

The researchers also found that deaths from alcohol-related cirrhosis increased substantially between 2009 and 2013 for the first time since the 1970s.

Women showed an 83.7 percent increase in alcohol use disorders in the time frame, and individuals who were 45 years to 64 years, and 65 years and older had 81.5 and 106.7 increases in the disorders respectively. A person was considered to have alcohol use disorder if they met criteria for alcohol dependence or abuse in the past year. Their findings were published Wednesday in JAMA Psychiatry.

But high-risk and problem drinking increased far more dramatically.

Overall, alcohol use disorders rose by nearly 50 percent, affecting a projected 8.5 percent of the population during the first research period, and 12.7 percent during the second. And it's worrying, because older adults at are a high risk of death, injury or disease connected to alcohol use - from falls, for instance, or from adverse interactions between drugs and drinking. The rate of high-risk drinking stood at 10 percent (20 million people) in 2001-2002.

Though the study reflects stark increases among the population overall, the most noticeable rises were in various population subgroups.

Dr. George Koob, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, left, and NIAAA scientist Dr. Lorenzo Leggio at a research laboratory inside the National Institutes of Health's hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, in December 2014. Plus, the authors also highlighted the financial burden that's associated with heavy drinkers.

There "is and always has been" a lack of awareness regarding the health dangers of drinking excessively, Schuckit says. "Clearly, alcohol does not get the necessary attention given the problems it causes", says Rehm.

The Distilled Spirits Council, the trade association of producers and marketers of distilled spirits, issued a response to the study, noting that an annual nationwide survey of about 70,000 people ages 12 and older showed a steady decline in alcohol use disorders since the study began in 1988. Prevalence of 12-month alcohol use, high-risk drinking, and DSM-IV alcohol use disorder in the United States, 2001-2002 to 2012-2013.
