Harper's left cleat appeared to slip on the wet first base bag as he leaned forward to try to beat Giants first baseman Ryder Jones.

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper left the first inning of Saturday's game with an apparent knee injury.

Harper clutched at his left knee after going down and was attended to by trainers. It was still raining when Harper's injury happened.

The play occurred minutes into a game that started at 10:06 p.m. - after a three-hour, one-minute rain delay. He was carried off the field without putting weight on his left leg.

Edwin Jackson (2-2, 3.75 ERA with Washington) of the Nationals was slated to face Chris Stratton (0-2, 6.63 ERA) of the Giants in the pitching matchup Friday.

Harper was replaced by Andrew Stevenson, who took over in center field with Brian Goodwin moving to right. It was reminiscent of the scene in the same area behind first base on April 29, when Nationals outfielder Adam Eaton sustained a season-ending knee injury, also trying to beat out a groundball. The first-place Nationals are 68-45.
