Dem rep: Trump North Korea statements 'reckless'

North Korea details missile launch plan

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping today reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearise the Korean Peninsula and agreed that North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behaviour, the White House said.

Mr. Xi also called on "relevant parties to maintain restraint" and to "persist in the general direction of dialogue, negotiations and a political settlement", CCTV said".

Military officials will move ahead with planned drills between the United States and South Korea.

President Donald Trump says that perhaps his "fire and fury" warning to North Korea "wasn't tough enough".

The Pentagon immediately rejected the joint Russian-Chinese proposals, which came as Donald Trump warned USA forces are '"locked and loaded" for military action against the North.

Mr Trump said: "I hope that they are going to fully understand the gravity of what I said, and what I said is what I mean".

When asked about a threat in North Korean media, Trump said that he would not respond to North Korean media and wait for comment from Kim Jong Un, who he said has been "very quiet in the last three days".

Japan, which is one of America's closest Asian allies, responded to the threat from North Korea to say any attack on USA citizens would threaten its own existence and says it will shoot down North Korean missiles flying over Japanese airspace.

In a statement issued yesterday on North Korea's state-owned news agency KCNA just before Trump's remarks, Pyongyang also escalated its rhetoric, saying that the U.S. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Friday his government would back the USA if North Korea attacked.

On Saturday, the White House issued a press release of the conversation, making no mention of Trump's prediction of Guam's tourism.

Heated rhetoric between the United States and North Korea are raising concern in much of the world that a major conflict is looming, but in South Korea it is the background noise of life.

"North Korea says it will target Guam, but it is possible that the missiles will fail to follow their programmed trajectories due to an error", a government official said.

The American people, Trump said, should be "very comfortable". "China can. And I think China will do a lot more", he said.

Trump's focus on Guam's tourism seems relatively tone deaf at a time when North Korea has said it could fit nuclear warheads on missiles. But the editorial also warned that China would seek to stop the USA and South Korea from any effort at regime change in North Korea.
