Facebook Authorises Chinese Firm's Launch of Moments-Like App

Western social media websites like Facebook and Twitter are blocked by China's censors, which has helped drive up the popularity of home-grown messaging app WeChat, owned by Tencent and microblogging service Weibo. Previously, the Chinese government blocked a number of products from Facebook, Inc.by dint of its Nazi internet policy.

The app is named Colorful Balloons, and is similar to Facebook's Moments.

The social network has been secretly testing a photo sharing app called Colourful Balloons in the country, The New York Times reported on Friday.

The app was released by a local company and doesn't carry any of Facebook's branding.

China is the largest online market in the works. Nevertheless, Silicon Valley corporations barely get access to the Chinese market due to China's strict internet censorship policy.

"We have long said that we are interested in China, and are spending time understanding and learning more about the country in different ways", Facebook said in a statement. But it has reportedly found a workaround in the form of Colorful Balloons.

It is unclear whether China's internet regulators were aware of the app's existence.

This isn't the only time Facebook has tried to tap into the Chinese market. Zhang's presence at such a high-level meeting indicated she is likely a Facebook adviser or employee.

Instead, a company called "Youge LLC" is credited as the creator. Mozur then connected the seemingly-fake company name behind the app to a woman who appeared in a photo of a meeting between Facebook and the Chinese government. The app collates pictures from a mobile device's photo albums and allows users to share them with a QR code. And Colorful Balloon is the only app listed under the developer.
