Facebook Launches Watch, A Platform To Watch Your Favourite Shows

Introducing Watch a new platform for shows on Facebook

Getting people to see Facebook as a video service is like Walmart trying to sell high fashion, or McDonald's peddling high-end food, said Joel Espelien, senior analyst with The Diffusion Group, a video research firm.

The social network is introducing the Watch tab to desktop and mobile, and will fill it with shows - either live or recorded - made up of episodes on a similar theme. Watch is also personalised, and offers Facebook users the ability to discover new shows that are relevant to them based on what they like to watch and what their friends are watching as well.

One benefit of Facebook's Watch is that people can watch videos from all of their devices. Every show has a comment section, where users can discuss new updates in detail and find new friends.

"Watch is comprised of shows, a new type of video on Facebook", said Nick Grudin, Facebook's vice president of media partnerships, in a blog post. "For example, you'll find sections like Most Talked About, which highlights shows that spark conversation, What's Making People Laugh, which includes shows where many people have used the "Haha" reaction, and What Friends Are Watching, which helps you connect with friends about shows they too are following". If you are anxious about missing episodes, Watch also features a Watchlist, so you will never miss out on new ones. However, the company is aiming to make it available to additional US viewers "in the coming weeks".

Some of the shows that will be initially available on Facebook Watch are Tastemade's Kitchen Little, Nas Daily, Gabby Bernstein, Nat Geo WILD's Safari Live, The Dodo's Comeback Kids, Tommy Mac and more.

Other shows will be produced by video partners including National Geographic, Time Inc., NASA and the NBA. "You'll be able to chat and connect with people during an episode, and join groups with people who like the same shows afterwards to build community".

Known as Watch, it goes beyond standard web clips by featuring original programming like sports, documentaries, reality shows, tutorials and more.

Here's everything we know so far about how Facebook Watch will work. While still available, this platform is geared more fore generic videos that users share on their News Feeds.

The launch is a limited move into scripted and professional video but puts Facebook on a course to challenge Google-owned YouTube, and possibly other streaming services if it gains a wider audience.
