Flawless Federer cruises into the semifinals

Roger Federer Rogers Cup live streaming

Swiss second seed Roger Federer used a dominant service game to earn a 6-3 7-6 (5) semi-final win over Dutchman Robin Haase at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Saturday.

Federer hammered five aces, made just two double faults and won 81 per cent of his first serve points in the 68-minute centre court match.

The victory marks Wozniacki's first career win against a No.1 and gives the 27-year-old a 6-2 advantage in head-to-head matches with Pliskova. Federer posted his seventh consecutive win over the Spaniard and boosted his season record to 34-2. He has an ATP Tour high five titles in 2017.

Holland's world number 52 Haase fought back after losing the first set against Argentina's Diego Schwartzman to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Federer, who is seeking his third Rogers Cup title after triumphs in Toronto in 2004 and 2006, will face either German Alexander Zverev or Canadian Denis Shapovalov in Sunday's final. Shapovalov, who needed a wild card to gain entry into the tournament, takes on Frenchman Adrian Mannarino later in the day.

In Sunday's final, the Swiss veteran will face the victor of the second semifinal between 18-year-old Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., and 20-year-old Alexander Zverev of Germany.

Shapovalov beat 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round and then knocked off the top-seeded Nadal in a third-set tiebreaker on Thursday in the round of 16.

Federer said he knows Haase well from serving with him on the ATP player council and from practising together. "When I broke him, I got that little bit of confidence, and I started believing in my shots again". The 30-year-old Haase, back to 52nd in the world after battling injuries for much of his career, improved to 5-0 against 36th-ranked Schwartzman. "I believe it's because I was more aggressive coming to the net".
