Guam sends out missile fact sheet

Japan’s Aegis-equipped destroyers are designed to stop ballistic missiles but analysts have questioned how effective they would actually

President Donald Trump issued a new threat to North Korea on Friday, saying the USA military was "locked and loaded" as Pyongyang accused him of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war and world powers expressed alarm.

Officials have not raised the territory's threat level even after Pyongyang laid out plans to strike near the island in the coming weeks, Guam governor Eddie Calvo said.

That's why the island of Guam was thrust into the spotlight Wednesday after North Korea threatened a strike that would create "an enveloping fire" around it and said an attack would come this month.

Watch Room staff monitor news and updates and coordinate with agencies on local in an event of emergency Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017 as Guam Homeland Security opens its 24-hour Watch Room operation in response to the threats from North Korea, in Hagatna, Guam.

It is a small slice of America, and it just happens to be in the middle of the Pacific.

"The U.S. should clearly face up to the fact that the ballistic rockets are now on constant standby", said the KCNA. He said the North would finalize a plan by mid-August to fire four mid-range missiles hitting waters 19 to 25 miles (30 to 40 kilometers) away from the island.

If U.S. territory is threatened, countermeasures are a no-brainer.

North Korea is actually capable of hitting Guam with its Hwasong-12.

Guam's Office of Civil Defense began disseminating fact sheets Friday to help residents prepare for a missile attack from North Korea.

Naval Base Guam is an important outpost for US fast-attack nuclear powered submarines that are a key means for gathering intelligence in the region, including off the Korean peninsula and in the South China Sea where China has been building military bases on man-made islands that have stirred tension across Asia.

Officials have not raised the U.S. territory's threat level after Pyongyang said it had laid out plans to strike near the island in the coming weeks. "It's a propaganda, that's how I feel", he said but added that the military offered an extra reassurance.

Guam has been a USA territory since 1898, when Spain ceded it in the wake of the Spanish-American War.

There's a sense of patriotism among those who cite the island's history of Guam residents serving in the USA military.

The majority of islanders are ethnically Chamorro - the indigenous group that has lived on the island for thousands of years - and their culture is a touchstone for the islander's way of life.

Guam is armed with the U.S. Army's defense system known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which can intercept missiles.
