Gulf crisis: UAE denies airspace transit for Qatar aircraft

The two, in statements carried on both the UAE's and Bahrain's state-run news agencies, said they had not agreed to open up their airspace in full to Qatari flights - but to only allow Qatari aircraft to use their airspace located above global waters.

Responding to the council's announcement Abdulhakeem bin Mohammed Al-Tamimi, chief of the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority, said: "The decisions confirm the neutrality of the organization and its sticking to its constitutional role of preserving the safety of civil aviation all over the world".

Meanwhile, the UAE and Bahrain on Wednesday sought to clarify a statement made the day before by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, which said both countries had agreed to open up some of their airspace, including new "temporary or contingency" routes, for Qatar Airways.

"We have been told there is an informal boycott, there is nothing we can do".

One of the bankers said that the boycott was not systematic and was applied on an individual basis varying from one government official to another.

According to UAE officials cited by the FT, major banks Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and Barclays won't get any significant mandates in Abu Dhabi in the near future, as large stakes in the lenders are held by Qatar's sovereign wealth fund along with members of the ruling family.

Former Qatari politician Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al-Thani holds the third largest stake of 4.07 percent in Deutsche Bank.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, plus Egypt severed ties with Qatar and cut off air, sea and ground links with Doha.

Doha has denied the allegations.

The response comes following a complaint lodged by Qatar over the current restrictions to regular air travel to and from the peninsula nation.
