Guliyev denies Van Niekerk to win historic 200m gold for Turkey

16th IAAF World Athletics Championships London 2017 Ramil Guliyew

Azeri-born Turk Ramil Guliyev ruined Wayde van Niekerk's bid for a first 200/400m double in 22 years when he outsprinted the South African to the 200m world title on Thursday. Wayde van Niekerk, seeking a 400/200m double had to settle for silver in 20.11, a thousandth of a second ahead of Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago.

Makwala was denied entry to the stadium on Tuesday for the 400m final as the IAAF tried to contain an outbreak of the norovirus, but returned on Wednesday to run a solo time trial and qualify for the semi-final before reaching the final - where he finished sixth.

"If I was an overnight success and it was my first gold medal I could accept a statement like that but I've been putting out great performances in the last two years now".

But those efforts may have taken their toll in the least preferred of his two events, and he exhausted down the home straight to finish sixth in 20.44, his slowest time all week.

"Maybe at the next competition, everyone will look at me instead".

Van Niekerk too looked tired in his sixth race in six days, and only held off Richards in bronze by one thousandth of a second.

There were a few boos from the packed-out London Stadium crowd as Guliyev streaked through the line ahead of Van Niekerk, thousands immediately upping and leaving rather than savouring the winning moment which ruined the South African's bid to match Michael Johnson, the USA track legend who won the double at the 1995 Gothenburg worlds and went on to repeat the feat a year later in the Atlanta Olympics.

"I delivered my best race at the right time".

"I've had one of the craziest championships journeys ever", he said. There are many people who don't think I deserve this.

"I think it's great for my career", the 400-meter Olympic and world champion said.

"This is the best moment of my career".

"I have the utmost respect for Usain and he is the one I have been watching over the last few years".

Taylor's best mark of 17.68 metrers was enough to edge out Claye, who could only manage 17.63m.

Lorraine Ugen could end that week-long drought in the long jump on Friday while Dina Asher-Smith is in contention in the 200m final, after recovering from a broken foot she suffered in February. I have got to know him quite well and I thank him for what he has done for the sport.

Van Niekerk had struggled through his semi-final, going through as a fastest qualifier by just 0.02 seconds, but he was still tipped to rebound to his best in the final.

"I was competing against some of the best athletes in the world, so it didn't bother me that the attention was on them", he said.

He was beaten by Turkey's Ramil Guliyev but was angered by Botswana's Makwala, who claimed he was sabotaged following his controversial build-up to the race.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson remains in the hunt for a high jump medal to make up for the disappointment of missing out in the heptathlon after both she and Morgan Lake made it through their qualifying pools with clearances at 1.92m.
