Infant deaths: Gorakhpur medical college principal resigns

A total number of 60 deaths have occurred in the past 5 days at Baba Raghav Das Medical College and Hospital

Speaking to ANI before leaving for Gorakhpur to look into the matter personally, Patel said, "The incident is very unfortunate and we are deeply saddened".

Almost 60 children have died in the past five days in Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital, forcing Uttar Pradesh government to launch a magisterial enquiry into the incident. He said that on August 7, 9 deaths have occurred.

He also said, "We have suspended the principal of the BRD Medical College and taking him guilty for his actions and an investigation on him has already been ordered and is underway".

Sticking to it's earlier statement, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday night claimed that no child died due to oxygen shortage in Gorakhpur BRD Medical College hospital.

Contrary to this, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath yesterday outrightly blamed the principal for laxity in performing his duty. The hospital has reportedly treated almost 370 cases in the past two months, of which 129 have resulted in deaths.

"The first resolution is that the community and medical fraternity needs to know the reason, that is, if it is due to disruption of oxygen".

The deaths of over 30 children in the past two days at a Gorakhpur hospital prompted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday to dispatch two cabinet ministers to the town with instructions to "spare none for the tragedy".

He cautioned the media against "fake reporting" in the incident and assured that those who are responsible for the deaths would face strict punishment.

"I am pained beyond words by the tragic deaths of 30 children in Gorakhpur". "Heart-wrenching incident. Saddened by children's death".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is constantly monitoring the situation in Gorakhpur and is in touch with central and state authorities, his office in Delhi said. This led to a shortage of oxygen at the 800-bed facility but this version is also being contested. The children who died were admitted in three wards at the hospital.

When asked about the dues to the firm, he said, "Such dues are normal".

SP leader Juhi Singh hit out at UP Government and said, "Despite knowing that each year, several adults and children die because of Japanese encephalitis virus, the government should have made the preparations in full swing".
