Iran Parliament 'Overwhelmingly' Approves Anti-US Bill

Iran Allocates $520Mln for Missile Program in Response to New US Sanctions - AFP

Iranian lawmakers unanimously passed the general outlines of the bill in a 240-0 vote with one abstention.

The vote came after the United States imposed fresh USA sanctions against Iran in July, targeting its missile programme.

The motion was passed during an open parliamentary session on Sunday morning.

The parliament has approved 16 measures that Tehran will take to counteract Washington's hostile acts against the Islamic Republic, Larijani said, according to Tasnim.

Deputy foreign minister Abbas Araqchi told members of parliament that the government supported the new bill.

The measure would allocate about $260 million each to Iran's ballistic-missile program and the Quds Force, the external branch of the IRGC that is said to be active in Syria and Iraq.

He praised the bill, saying it "was designed wisely so that it does not violate the (nuclear deal) and provide excuses for opposing sides".

In response to this, Iran complained to the UN Security Council about the US sanctions and accused Washington of breaching the nuclear deal.

The plan would require Iran's government and armed forces to draw up a strategy to counter USA violations of human rights around the world, and to support Iranian bodies and individuals affected by United States sanctions.

Tehran says its missile program does not breach a United Nations resolution which endorsed the nuclear deal.

The bill must now pass a second vote before being submitted to the Guardians Council for final approval and passage into law.

Trump repeatedly threatened to tear up what he once called "the worst deal ever", but last month he backed away from a key campaign promise to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.

In the meantime, about $150 million will go to develop Iran's ballistic missiles.

A string of close encounters between U.S. ships and Iranian vessels in the Gulf in recent months has added to the tensions between the two countries.
