Manana due in court on Thursday over club assault‚ says Mbalula

Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana Launching The Ekurhuleni East Tvet College Daveyton Campus on 26 May 2017

"Arrests need to be done procedurally", Mbalula said.

"According to the investigating officer, there is no pending case in Ermelo, so at this point, the information that we have is that there is no pending case against the accused", she said.

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says he wants to know whether deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana's police bodyguards were with him during the assault he's admitted to at a Johannesburg nightclub. And if that's the case, what about police action with regards to the tens of thousands of other women beaten, assaulted, raped and murdered in South Africa?

The minister fielded questions from the media on Manana's apparent special treatment, after video footage emerged showing that he had been escorted through the back door of the Randburg Magistrate's Court, with police protection. "Nonetheless, everybody is presumed innocent until proven otherwise". "I have noted that many in society would prefer for the Minister of Police to carry handcuffs and cuff up any suspect", he said.

Manana made a brief appearance before Magistrate Liezel Davids. "He's not a flight risk and as police we can not mete out punishment but secure suspects for court processes", Mbalula said while he continued to list the reasons for Manana not being arrested.

The DA and the EFF have asked President Jacob Zuma to fire Manana.

He said Manana's admission of guilt on tape was part of the evidence gathered, along with witness statements. It was in his and the public's interest to get involved and find out what happened.

Mbalula said the Deputy Minister was a known individual who could not hide from the law.

Violence started with dehumanising language and the dehumanising way in which parliamentarians spoke to one another on national television‚ which had created a "psyche of violence"‚ she said.

"There is something wrong in terms of the administering of justice at a police station level".
