NY high school student dies after injury at football practice

Sachem East High School Football Player Dies During Practice

A high-school football player on New York's Long Island was killed on Thursday when he was struck in the head by a log his teammates were carrying on the field during a conditioning drill, police said.

Although school officials did not comment on the drill, Douglas Casa, the head of the Korey Stringer Institute at the University of CT, had some concerns about the difficulty of the exercise for high schoolers. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and the Sachem school district". No school officials, coaches or teammates commented to the AP at the time the story was published.

Mileto was in the 11th grade. A person at his home declined to speak with reporters. Five players were carrying the log during this morning's offseason workout when it fell and hit Mileto, according to a local police statement obtained by Newsday. The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. Mileto was rushed from the field in cardiac arrest.
