An NYPD officer was shot in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of Brooklyn Thursday

An NYPD officer was shot in Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon.

It happened on Ridgewood Avenue in the Cypress Hills section just after 4:30 p.m. Police Commissioner James O'Neill says the 29-year-old suspect's mother called 911 saying she needed help with her son, but he was not violent.

When the officer went to a back room to talk with the man, he fired through the door multiple times, hitting the officer, police said.

Some shots hit the officer's vest; another hit his arm.

City Hall officials say Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed.

She was taken to a nearby hospital where her condition is not known. "Our officer is going to come thorugh it, he's a courageous young man, he's going to come through it".

It was not clear what kind of weapon the suspect used to shoot Nguyen, but authorities later recovered two guns at the scene.
