One survivor in overnight Long Island hammer attacks

Nassau County and Hempstead Village police investigate the

A fourth woman, Candace Murray, escaped the house and jumped on a neighbor's auto to get help, screaming, "He's trying to kill us!" She also died from bludgeoning.

His younger sister Melissa, 28, and two friends heard the fatal beating, the paper reported.

Bobby Vanderhall, 34, allegedly entered his mother's Hempstead home through the basement door at approximately 1:15 a.m. Saturday, Nassau County police confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

Authorities said Vanderhall's behaviour had become more troubling recently, leading his mother to obtain an order of protection against him.

"When he came here last night and it looked like the doors were secured, he became enraged", said Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick, commanding officer of the Homicide Squad. He took a framing hammer from the garage, broke into the home and attacked the group of women, according to police.

"The family right now is distraught", said Juanita Johnson, a cousin of the Vanderhalls to NBC New York.

The fourth woman who escaped is reported to be in stable condition at Nassau County Medical Center. Police said she's 29 years old. They said he then attacked the other women.

He described his daughter and her friends as fun-loving women who went to Carnival in Trinidad and were planning to visit Cuba in the fall.

Police said Lynn Vanderhall kicked her son out of the house at some point after a March 2017 incident where he allegedly slapped and physically harassed her, police said.

Sunday morning he will be arraigned on three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. He is scheduled for arraignment on Sunday and is now being kept in Mineola in Nassau County.

Relatives say he was a friendly and athletic kid whose mental and emotional problems got worse after the sudden death of his father.
