Researchers Hack DNA Sequencing Tools, Genetic Histories Revealed

UW researchers demonstrate how evildoers could eventually hack into DNA data

As terrifying as this may sound, there is very little risk of your computer being hacked by DNA anytime soon. Soon after, researchers were able to gain full control over the computer used, according to the report. And when that FASTQ file is compressed with a common compression program known as fqzcomp-FASTQ files are often compressed because they can stretch to gigabytes of text-it hacks that compression software with its buffer overflow exploit, breaking out of the program and into the memory of the computer running the software to run its own arbitrary commands.

Copies of the DNA were ordered online. In this case, the command was to contact another computer operated by the research team who were able to easily take over the host system that was analysing DNA, it was reported. Modern sequencing techniques can go through hundreds of millions of DNA strands at the same time, and the sequencing machines themselves need to hookup to computers.

They said closing the security gaps in the software that's used for analyzing DNA is mostly a matter of following best practices in the computer industry.

To make this DNA hack work, the research team included a known security vulnerability in a DNA processing program and also designed a synthetic DNA strand carrying malicious code. "We do want to give people a heads up that as these molecular and electronic worlds get closer together, there are potential interactions that we haven't really had to contemplate before".

DNA sequencing pipeline includes any facility that accepts DNA samples for computer-based gene sequencing and processing, and an attacker could tamper with forensic evidence (and do much much more) if they are able to inject malicious DNA. According to the researchers, numerous programs used to sequence and analyze DNA are incredible insecure, leaving them open to attacks. They are also needed to store billions of DNA bases that can be sequences from a single DNA sample.

To achieve their gene hack, the researchers created the "best possible" chances of success by disabling several security features and creating a vulnerability in one of their bioinformatics programmes. "We have no evidence to believe that the security of DNA sequencing or DNA data in general is now under attack".

'It remains to be seen how useful this would be, but we wondered whether under semi-realistic circumstances it would be possible to use biological molecules to infect a computer through normal DNA processing, ' said co-author Peter Ney.

"To be clear, there are lots of challenges involved", said co-author Lee Organick, a research scientist in the Molecular Information Systems Lab.

Comparative methods have been utilized to store information on DNA, however, in this occurrence, the group encoded the arrangement with a bit of malware that it knew would taint the PC.

The researchers proved that the malware encoded inside DNA could take over a computer sequencing the genetic material.

Remember a few month ago when we were all laughing at Harvard scientists for putting a GIF inside a strand of DNA?

When the researchers sent their carefully crafted attack to DNA synthesis service Integrated DNA Technologies, they found DNA had other restrictions too.

They used nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA, to produce a code that relates to the individual pixels of each image.
