Rory McIlroy and his fantastic cart-path par at PGA

PGA Championship 2017-PGA-2017 PGA Championship

The world No 25 was soon joined at the top of the leaderboard by Japanese number three Matsuyama, who carded a round of 64 despite having his stride broken by the weather.

World No.7 Day started the third round two shots off the pace but crashed out of contention with a series of errors, notably a quadruple-bogey eight at Quail Hollow's par-4 18th.

Kisner has now held at least a share of the lead after all three rounds this week. On the back nine, he had three bogeys in a row from third to fifth, before stemming the rot with a par and then closed the day with three straight birdies for a card of one-under 70 and was Tied-15th.

After a fairly creditable one-over 72 overnight, it took Lahiri 12 holes to find his first birdie in the second round and he added a second on 18th, which he played as ninth and birdied on Thursday, too. But unlike his playing partners, he avoided catastrophe on the final three holes.

Rickie Fowler's first two rounds have included some mistakes, including this chip shot on the 13th hole that rolled right back to him.

It just feels like he has to win another US Open.

So now his best chance is a Hail Mary on the weekend.

Matsuyama had a bogey-free round that including seven birdies, five on the final seven holes. He followed with a bogey on the par-4 18th hole to make the turn at 1 over.

Jason Day has had great success at this tournament, winning in 2015 and finishing second a year ago.

"I haven't hit it this well this whole summer - a lot of average finishes", Kisner said.

"I just had a couple of bad swings, missed a couple of greens in the wrong spots and if you do that you have no hope".

McIlroy managed to muster back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth (his 16th and 17th) to get back to two over and alleviate the threat of missing the cut, but he has plenty of work to do. The round will resume Saturday with 26 players on the course. American Chris Stroud is best placed among those yet to complete the round, five-under with five holes left. Here's a full list of the tee times and pairings for Saturday.

"That would be a cool run, you know, at any PGA Tour event". But the last two weeks his putting has looked stronger with only 54 total putts thus far in the PGA Championship.

"I like looking at leaderboards seeing what the cut line is and where I am, so I was looking all the way around and it was nice to see my name up there with the big guys".

Patrick Reed, Gary Woodland, Scott Brown and Francesco Molinari are also at 2 under.
