Shopian: Three militants were today killed in an overnight encounter with security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir, the police said today. One Kevyt Konekivaan (KK) series rifle used by Itoo and two AK series rifles were recovered from the encounter scene.

In a separate incident early August 13 rebels fired at an army convoy in the northern are of Hajin and injured two police officers and a soldier, the same police officer said.

Two soldiers were killed and six security personnel were injured in two separate encounters in Kashmir. However, the search operation is still on.

Yasin Itoo, known by his nom de guerre Mehmood Ghaznavi had taken over the command of Hizbul Mujahideen after the killing of militant commander Burhan Wani in July past year. "The gunfight is still going on in the village", police said.

Earlier, two Army men were martyred and three others injured in the encounter. Later, all the three terrorists were successfully gunned down by the forces.

A police official said a body was lying at the encounter site.

Five soldiers were injured in the gunfight yesterday and were evacuated to 92 Base Hospital of the Army for treatment. Additional security forces were rushed to the area and entire area was sealed to prevent militants to escape from the cordoned off area.

In June this year, the Hizbul militant had released a video threatening of attacks against security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

A civilian, Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir, who sustained injuries in a petrol bomb explosion succumbed to his injuries.

Internet services have been blocked in Badgam district following the identification of Itoo among the slain militants.
