Stoneman, Crane included in England squad for first Test against West Indies

Mark Stoneman and Mason Crane named in 13-man England squad for first Test against West Indies with Chris Woakes returning to the fold

England will play West Indies in three-Test, one-T20I and four-ODI series.

Since leaving Durham earlier this year, the 30-year-old has amassed 828 runs at an average of 59.14 in the championship and is well on course to pass 1,000 runs for the fifth year running.

"It's been a long road with some ups and downs along the way, so to get the call was quite a release of emotion and something I'm very proud of", Stoneman told BBC Radio London.

"You see it written about and you dream in your head that maybe you could do but I thought probably not this year".

Durham's Jennings, 25, is dropped after averaging 15.88 in the 3-1 series victory over South Africa, having passed 50 only once since hitting a century on his debut in India.

James Whitaker, the National Selector, said: 'Selectors would like to offer their congratulations to Mark Stoneman and Mason Crane who thoroughly deserve their opportunity in the squad.

Crane audition to return down under?

The 20-year-old has endured an indifferent season with Hampshire but will get his chance to stake a claim for an Ashes spot after making a positive impression in England's Twenty20 series against the Proteas in June.

He became the first overseas player to represent Australian state side New South Wales for 32 years when he played in their Sheffield Shield game against South Australia in March. It is an unbelievable feeling to get called up and hopefully I put in some hard work now and I'll get a game.

Clearly England have moved on from Adil Rashid in red-ball cricket for whatever reason - he took 30 wickets in India and Bangladesh over the winter, so I have some sympathy for him.

Paceman Chris Woakes has recovered fully from the side strain suffered during the Champions Trophy and returns to the squad in place of Steven Finn.

The opening Test in Birmingham will be the first-ever day-night Test to be staged in the country.

By replacing Jennings, Stoneman will form another all-left-handed combination at the top of England´s order with Cook in a match that starts at Birmingham´s Edgbaston ground on Thursday, July 17.

Keaton Jennings will be very disappointed, although it does open up a can of worms in that he had the hardest of the opponents in South Africa, who have a really decent pace attack.

Enter Stoneman who will have a golden opportunity in three matches against a depleted West Indies to earn a place on the plane to Australia with England deciding Haseeb Hameed needs more time to add to his unbeaten 87 for Lancashire this week before they consider him for a comeback. He might have easier opposition but quite awkward conditions to make his mark in the day-night Test.

'It has very much felt like it has come quickly. He's one for the future and one England like the look of, but they will have to tread warily.

Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Alastair Cook, Mason Crane, David Malan, Toby Roland-Jones, Ben Stokes, Mark Stoneman, Tom Westley and Chris Woakes.
