The Term 'Eclipse' Gets Another Moment in the Sun

Cleveland State To Host Eclipse Viewing Party For Faculty, Staff And Students

The eclipse will be visible here from about noon to 3 p.m. NOVA will follow teams working on the forefront of solar science and solar storm detection, incorporating immersive CGI animation to reveal the sun's secret mechanisms, stunning sequences of the eclipse itself, NASA footage, and more. Then, a sliver will reappear and grow as the eclipse passes. The "path of totality" where the total solar eclipse is visible will stretch through 13 states from OR to SC.

When should I look for it? In Fairfax County the moon will begin to cover the sun at 1:17 p.m. and the eclipse will end at 4:01 p.m. The period of total eclipse, for locations along its path, is less than three minutes long and will stagger across the continent over the course of about 90 minutes. Only in areas that see the maximum total eclipse and during the peak eclipse is it safe to remove glasses (and that is a fairly short window). The next total eclipse won't occur in the USA until April 2024 and the next total eclipse won't touch Virginia until May 2078. Even if you're outside the main path, you can still get the treat of a partial eclipse. Sunglasses, even very dark glasses, are not safe for looking at the sun.

You need two pair of glasses: one to protect your eyes from the bright sun, the other to protect the lens on your smartphone camera. Your best bet is to stick with a brand whose glasses are certified by NASA and the American Astronomical Society (AAS).

How can I safely view the eclipse? A live stream of the total solar eclipse will be broadcast in the Naturalist Center.

Scientists say the eclipse will give us an unprecedented view of the solar atmosphere never seen before.

The total eclipse in America will be visible in 14 different states, according to NASA. That eclipse took a somewhat similar path as this month's will, from OR to Florida.

The total solar eclipse is the first we've been able view from coast to coast since 1918, and it begins on the coast of OR at 10:15 a.m. PT on August 21.

Why don't they happen more often?

While we'll be able to see the eclipse in 85% totality around the Shenandoah Valley, that isn't lessening people's excitement for this momentous occasion.

Eclipse viewing glasses also will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis on the library plaza, the news release said.
