Trump admin speaking in one voice on N Korea threat: State Dept

Sebastian Gorka Interview On Radio 4's Today Programme Prompts Disbelief

He said, 'Woe betide anyone who militarily challenges the United States, ' and that is his portfolio.

On Fox, Gorka insisted that his criticism was of "the fake news industrial complex", but argued it is the Pentagon's job to address military affairs.

"But is the guy a legitimate national security adviser to the president?"

Tillerson's call for talks with North Korea is "strongly" supported by the 62 lawmakers and should be followed by an effort to minimize the preconditions, they said.

The Trump administration is speaking in one voice on the threat posed by North Korea, a State Department official has said, dismissing reports that there was dissent within the Government over the issue. Naturally, this flies in the face of comments that his own chaotic administration has made, with Secretary Of State Rex Tillerson recently suggesting that Americans "should sleep well" because diplomatic sanctions on North Korea will ultimately be the most effective way to stop the escalating tensions.

En route to the US island territory of Guam early Thursday Tillerson said that a threat military force from President Donald Trump the day before didn't carry any weight. If America initiated a first strike, North Korea could still retaliate by destroying a US city.

North Korea responded by claiming it is preparing a plan to fire missiles at the United States territory of Guam in the western Pacific.

Far from reassuring everyone the world isn't hurtling towards nuclear destruction, the interview with President Trump's Deputy Assistant instead instilled a foreboding sense of doom amongst listeners.

Trump on Tuesday seemed to be setting the red line for North Korea at any kind of threat - which Pyongyang, of course, makes often and would do again, soon after Trump's comments, by threatening Guam.

"Sebastian, you know this is going to be all over the papers and whether you had the exact meaning that people have now interpreted it as, it looks like to some people, it looks like - forget backstabbing, that you frontstabbed the secretary of state and, you know, people look at that and say who was he to admonish the process."

GORKA: Absolutely, absolutely. No, I never said that, I said for reporters to force our chief diplomat, the awesome Rex Tillerson to give details of military options is nonsensical.

Gorka's comments drew considerable media attention since, regardless of the context, it was unusual to see a top White House aide publicly saying it was "simply nonsensical" for the secretary of the State to discuss military affairs.
