J&K: Encounter underway in Shopian; 2-3 terrorists holed up

Two army men were killed and three others, including a captain, injured in an encounter with militants in Shopian district of south Kashmir, the police said on Saturday.

Police officials said that the security forces were conducting a search operation when the militants opened fire at them.

In the initial gunfight five soldiers including an officer sustained injuries and were shifted to military hospital Badamibagh Srinagar.

Separately, in north Kashmir's Bandipora, two policemen were wounded when they were shot by suspected militants, and a civilian succumbed to his injuries from a petrol bomb attack in Srinagar.

The area has been cordoned, as around three terrorists are believed to be holed in.

When this report was filed the identity of the soldiers could not be immediately ascertained. The dead body of one terrorist has been recovered and counter-terror operations are underway.

They said that during the gunfight, four houses were also damaged.

Meanwhile, stone pelting clashes erupted near the encounter site. The Army quickly launched a search operation in the area but no arrests were made, the police sources said.
