United Nations says Nigeria relations 'intact' after unauthorised raid

Nigeria

The United Nations says Nigerian soldiers have conducted an unauthorized search of a U.N. humanitarian base in the city where the Boko Haram insurgency began.

"In the last one week, cordon and search operations were conducted in Jiddari-Polo, Muna Garage, and Jakana amongst several other areas".

Nigerian forces conducted an unauthorized dawn raid on the UN's main base in the country's conflict-torn northeast on Friday (Saturday in Manila), the United Nations said, further inflaming tensions between the government and aid groups.

In a separate statement, Ibrahim Attahiru, a commander of Nigeria's operations against Boko Haram, said the army was not trying to block the United Nations' activities.

"It, therefore, became expedient to take preemptive action by combing the general area through a cordon and search operation".

"The security forces carried out a search of the tented camp and left the area at circa 0800 hours".

United Nations in Nigeria has reacted over what it termed the Nigerian Army's "unauthorised" search on its base for humanitarian workers in Maiduguri.

An internal United Nations memo seen by the Agence France Presse suggested that the Nigerian forces might have been searching for the leader of the jihadist Boko Haram group, Abubakar Shekau, after rumours spread locally that he was hiding in the compound known as the "Red Roof".

The raid which is first of its kind since Humanitarian Workers and Non Governmental Organizations trooped into the state in the name of cartering for the well being of the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs in the north east.

But a spokeswoman, for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Samantha Newport, condemned the raid, saying the army searched the building, without permission.

The raid happened against a backdrop of strained relations between the Nigerian military and foreign organisations seeking to relieve the humanitarian disaster engulfing the country's northeast.

The Nigerian military, which claimed there was no sign it was a United Nations camp, issued a statement Friday calling its "operation" a success but added that no suspect was found. I am extremely concerned that these actions could be detrimental to the critical work that is being carried out every day to support the most vulnerable in the region and I call upon the Government of Nigeria to provide clarification.

"The general public is cautioned to avoid peddling rumours which may cause disaffection and to remain law abiding".

The insurgency has driven at least two million people from their homes, left tens of thousands on the brink of starvation and millions more without secure access to food. Tens of thousands live on the brink of starvation and millions more lack secure access to food.

"Peace building is a collective responsibility", he said in a statement.
