A U.S. mother who accidentally smothered her newborn son as she slept is suing the hospital where his death occurred for $8.6m (£6.6m).

The lawsuit, filed Friday, claims Portland Adventist Medical Center was negligent in medicating Thompson and leaving her unsupervised with her infant son, Jacob, for a session of late-night breastfeeding in her hospital bed, KATU reported.

"The hospital staff was totally irresponsible for giving the mother Vicodin AND Ambien at the same time", wrote one Daily Mail reader.

Earlier that night she had been given "narcotic painkillers and sleep aids" by nurses at the Portland Adventist Medical Center in the state of OR, her lawsuit states.

"About an hour later, still drowsy and groggy, Mrs. Thompson noticed her son was unresponsive in her arms", the lawsuit states.

"She called for a nurse while she tried to get him to respond", the suit states. The suit says Thompson called for a nurse, and when none came, she "carried her son to the hallway and frantically yelled for help". When the baby died, doctors determined that he suffered "severe hypoxia", as Jacob had gone without oxygen for too long, suffering severe and permanent brain damage. She also declined to comment on the hospital's policy regarding newborns sharing beds with their mothers, per The Oregonian's report.

The lawsuit seeks damages for the baby's "desperation and anxiety" as he suffocated and for Thompson's "severe emotional distress upon unintentionally killing her firstborn child".

Thompson now has a daughter, her attorney said. She said they were unable to provide any additional information at the time.

He was transferred to the NICU of a different hospital and spent six days on life support before Thompson and her husband, Graham, made the hard decision to terminate his life support at the recommendation of doctors, the complaint notes.

Monica Thompson gave birth to her baby in August 2012.

Seven days later, the baby died. I am sharing our story in the hopes that no mother or family will ever have to suffer through a tragedy such as this. More and more, hospitals are being encouraged to promote mother-baby bonding, skin-to-skin contact, early breastfeeding, etc.

"She tried to stimulate her son's suckling reflexes without success".

About 3,500 babies die each year in the United States because of "unsafe sleep environments", such as suffocation or strangulation; some die of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. [They] left the room and left mother and son unattended. However, at the time, Thompson says she was under "a combination" of "narcotic painkillers and sleep aids", and she blames the hospital for the loss of her precious son.
