Investors kept a wary eye on escalating tensions between the US and North Korea. "The typical textbook trade is that investors rush for safe haven, hence we have experienced a bounce for the gold price".

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 2.26 percent.

Shares of Walt Disney were down 4.23 percent, the biggest drag on Dow, as investors doubted whether the company can succeed with its plan to launch its own streaming services rather than rely on Netflix to reach online viewers.

Energy stocks also fell along with the price of crude oil. It rose $15.70, or 1.2 percent, to $1,277.80 an ounce.

"Trump's response was aggressive and that's why the (stock) market turned lower", said Ken Polcari, director of the NYSE floor division at O'Neil Securities.
