Western Force to be cut from Super Rugby competition from 2018

Western Force players celebrate a try during the round 17 Super Rugby match against the NSW Waratahs at nib Stadium in Perth

Australian Rugby Union chief executive Bill Pulver has announced he will stand down, after the governing body confirmed it would cut the Western Force from Super Rugby.

The ARU agreed to cut one of its five franchises during a meeting of Super Rugby stakeholders in April, when it was chose to reduce the competition from 18 clubs to 15 for next season.

"I'd like to acknowledge Matt Hodgson, Mark Sinderberry and the entire WA Rugby community for all of their commitment and hard work".

Pulver, who took over from John O'Neill in 2013, says he will stay on until the board finds his replacement.

"Our immediate concern is to support the individuals at the Western Force through these hard circumstances and we will deploy various ARU management staff to Western Australia to provide assistance to all players and staff".

"This has been a complex process to reduce Australia's Super Rugby representation to four teams as agreed by SANZAAR following its review of the competition", he said, referring to the league's governing body.

"It has been a harrowing process so my sense is it's a good time for renewal, said Pulver whose five-year term expired next February".

"I am very very sorry for all the people affected by this in Western Australia".

"Our immediate concern is to support the individuals at the Western Force through these hard circumstances and we will deploy various ARU management staff to Western Australia to provide assistance to all players and staff". "We understand that Rugby WA are considering their legal position from this point forward and we respect their rights to explore such avenues".

"All contracted players will have their contracts honoured".

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, billionaire supporter of the Force, Andrew Forrest, vowed that he would fight the ruling.

"Teams like the Wallaroos and community rugby are not getting the support they need".

"We are regretful that this issue has consumed so much of the public commentary on the game in 2017".

Clyne said Pulver had been hamstrung by the multiple layers of governance in the game and that it was sad that rugby "turns on its own" more than any other sport.

The ARU has promised not to forget abandon the game in Western Australia, saying the state still held an "important" place in Australian rugby.

The South African Rugby Union cut two teams and negotiated for them to compete in a European competition next season.

Instead, it has taken months, and the final decision has prompted extensive fan outrage as many believe that the Melbourne Rebels instead should have been removed from the competition.
